LitVM vs Litecoin: Architectural Differences and Capabilities

A technical comparison detailing what remains on the Litecoin base layer, what executes on LitVM, and how the two chains interact.

Updated

LitVM is an EVM-compatible layer-2 execution engine built for the Litecoin ecosystem, whereas Litecoin is a standalone proof-of-work base layer blockchain. When evaluating LitVM vs Litecoin, the Litecoin mainchain handles base asset issuance, MWEB privacy, and Scrypt mining consensus, while LitVM executes Ethereum-style smart contracts at thousands of transactions per second using zkLTC for gas. LitVM is a hybrid rollup rather than a pure zkRollup, and it currently runs on the LiteForge testnet; mainnet has not launched, and the $LITVM token does not exist as a tradeable asset yet.

LitVM vs Litecoin: Technical Comparison

Property Litecoin L1 LitVM Rollup
Primary Role Base settlement, consensus, asset issuance Smart contract execution, transaction batching
Consensus / Proving Scrypt Proof of Work (>2 PH/s) Arbitrum Nitro execution with Succinct SP1 zkVM proofs
Throughput ~56 TPS Thousands of TPS
Block Time 2.5 minutes 161ms (as of 15 August 2026)
Transaction Finality ~2.5 minutes (single block) Minutes via SP1 validity proofs
Execution Environment Non-Turing complete Script, MWEB EVM-equivalent (Shanghai version)
Primary Gas / Asset LTC zkLTC (1:1 backed by locked LTC)
Sequencing Decentralized miners Espresso shared sequencer
Settlement Layer Self-settling base chain Ethereum in Phase 1; Litecoin in Phase 3

What Stays on the Litecoin Base Layer

Litecoin L1 operates independently of LitVM. The base chain maintains the core properties developed over its 14-year operating history:

  • Scrypt Proof of Work: Litecoin miners secure the network with over 2 PH/s of hash rate, maintaining sovereign consensus and native LTC issuance.
  • Block Generation: Standard transactions continue to settle on Litecoin's native 2.5-minute block schedule.
  • MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB): Confidential transactions and privacy features remain native to the Litecoin L1 chain.
  • Native Layer-1 Assets: Protocol extensions such as Ordinals, Runes, LTC-20, and Charms remain directly on the base chain.
  • Base Asset Custody: The primary reserves backing the rollup ecosystem are locked on the Litecoin mainchain via BitcoinOS Grail bridge Taproot locks.

Litecoin itself undergoes no soft or hard forks to enable LitVM, as rollup settlement and proof verification do not require changes to the core Litecoin protocol.

What LitVM Adds for LTC Holders and Developers

LitVM introduces programmable smart contract capabilities to the Litecoin ecosystem without altering base chain rules.

EVM Equivalence

Developers can deploy standard Ethereum smart contracts without modifying source code. Tooling such as Hardhat, Foundry, Remix, ethers.js, and viem work natively, and developers have access to Arbitrum precompiles (ArbSys) and DIA data oracles.

zkLTC and Base Gas Mechanics

Rather than paying transaction fees in an unpegged, speculative asset, network gas is paid in zkLTC. zkLTC is backed 1:1 by native LTC locked on the Litecoin mainchain through the BitcoinOS Grail bridge. The Grail bridge utilizes a 300-byte BitSNARK proof and a 1-of-n honest verifier model, operating without central custodians or multisig committees. When users bridge LTC to LitVM, native supply is locked and zkLTC is minted; redeeming zkLTC burns the rollup token and unlocks base LTC on L1.

Expanded Financial Utility

LitVM enables complex decentralized applications, such as automated market makers, lending protocols, and institutional yield vaults. For instance, the project has published institutional yield vault integrations with DNA Fund targeted at generating 7–11% APR on spot LTC, with yield accruing directly in LTC.

How LitVM Settles to Litecoin

LitVM is designed as a hybrid rollup, combining the optimistic execution of Arbitrum Nitro with validity proofs from Succinct SP1 zkVM. This allows the rollup to avoid the typical seven-day optimistic challenge window, reaching mathematical finality in minutes. The connection to Litecoin's base settlement occurs across three distinct phases:

  1. Phase 1 (Current Architecture): LitVM executes transactions via Nitro, sequences through the Espresso permissionless shared sequencer, and settles state and validity proofs onto Ethereum while utilizing zkLTC for gas.
  2. Phase 2 (Dual Anchoring): Finalized batch proofs are additionally anchored to the Litecoin mainchain by inscribing proof data through standard extended transactions, requiring no base protocol modification.
  3. Phase 3 (Canonical Litecoin Settlement): Settlement migrates fully off Ethereum. Litecoin's Scrypt proof-of-work layer becomes the canonical finality layer for all LitVM state transitions.

Current Status and Operational Metrics

LitVM is currently active only as a testnet named LitVM LiteForge, which launched in April 2026. Mainnet has not launched, and third-party security audits are ongoing.

As of 15 August 2026, the LiteForge testnet has processed the following verifiable operational metrics:

  • Total Blocks: 40.5 million
  • Total Transactions: 237.1 million
  • Unique Wallets: 13.1 million
  • Average Block Time: 161 milliseconds

Users and developers should note that the governance token, $LITVM, does not exist as a tradeable asset. The Token Generation Event (TGE) is scheduled to take place after the testnet concludes, preceding the full mainnet launch. Any token currently circulating under the ticker $LITVM is unauthorized and should be treated as fraudulent.

Questions

Does LitVM replace the Litecoin blockchain?

No. LitVM does not replace Litecoin. Litecoin remains the sovereign proof-of-work base layer that secures the network and holds the reserves, while LitVM acts as an EVM execution layer built on top of it.

Is LitVM a pure zkRollup?

No, LitVM is a hybrid rollup. It uses Arbitrum Nitro for optimistic execution and immediate transaction confirmations, paired with the Succinct SP1 zkVM to generate validity proofs that achieve settlement finality in minutes instead of a seven-day window.

Can I use standard LTC directly on LitVM?

To use LTC on LitVM, you bridge it through the BitcoinOS Grail bridge, which locks native LTC on L1 and mints zkLTC at a 1:1 ratio. zkLTC serves as the native gas and base asset across the rollup and can be redeemed back for standard LTC.

Can I trade the $LITVM token right now?

No. The $LITVM token does not exist as a tradeable asset. The token generation event will occur after the LiteForge testnet phase and prior to mainnet launch; any existing token claiming to be $LITVM is fraudulent.
